THE DAY ECW DIED

October 22, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

It is almost bitter sweet that the night the WWE brought back ECW to begin it’s second rain was in fact the night that ECW died. The only respect I can shine towards the WWE is that they did send ECW out with guns blazing.

At this moment the show had come to its main event for the evening with the match up being RVD the home grown champion of ECW verses John Cena the poster boy for the WWE at our present day and age. IN the beginning one can only be astonished by the crowd. This crowd was in fact the last true ECW crowd to be established under one roof, everyone was wearing their ECW t-shirts and hats. Signs saying” Anti-Cena” and “If Cena wins we riot” were posted throughout the masses.

When RVD entered an eruption occurred as the fans showed whose side they were on, however, one thing I was not expecting was the reaction John Cena received. Now obviously in this case Cena was the heel, at least to the crowd, but what occurred after John Cena entered the ring blew me away.

As in many cases a wrestler will take off his attire, in this case a t-shirt, and toss it into the crowd as a keep sake for one lucky fan. But the pro-ECW fans wanted no part in anything Cena had to offer and tossed the shirt back into the ring. A shocked John Cena went to the opposite end of the arena and tossed it to another fan, again it was tossed back. Every time this happened the crowd fed off its hate for Cena and continued to toss back the shirt. That is a once in a lifetime thing to see, and to cap it all off RVD simply walks to Cena who is holding his returned shirt and informs him of who he is “RVD”.

If you thought that was enough stay tuned because “fuck you Cena” chants and “CENA SWALLOWS” chants would occur in the opening moments of the match, toilet paper would be tossed around and many boo’s would occur on any offense Cena had.

Now as fake as you want to say pro wrestling is I will argue that by agreeing it is fake but suggesting everything is fake in the same regard, a movie it fake because it is scripted and shot but once it is put together there is an aura that one cannot ever accuse of being fake. When Cena and RVD go toe to toe and being to punch one another it is obviously scripted, however, what gives this moment life is that the fans are commanding the actions by booing Cena and cheering RVD, the fans control how long this will go and how much delay and build up are involved in every blow.

Additionally to those accusing wrestling of being fake. Like any sports star they can bring their A-game when they wish. Cena sling shooting RVD into a steel chair would normally be blocked with RVD putting his hands up and selling the move as if he took it to the face, HOWEVER, in the moment of RVD wrestling like a CHAMPION he eats that chair face first.

I highly suggest any true fan of wrestling to watch this match-up as it is a historical moment in pro wrestling history. I only add that when you watch it take into consideration the amount of heat Cena had as a heel and only pray that when Cena returns this year he isn’t the repetitive face but a newly defined heel.

Great American Bash Results – Live Real Time Results

Triple H defeats Edge, after Edge accidentally spears Vickie Guerrero.

*SPOILERS* WWE Smackdown Taping Results from Charlotte, North Carolina

July 18, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

Report by Bill and PWinsider.com

Dark Match:

Ron Killings beat Domino pretty easily.

SmackDown:

We found out that Edge and Vickie Guerrero were married earlier in the day. They show clips of the ceremony. We find out that tonight’s show will be the reception for the two of them. Chavo raises a toast to his new uncle-in-law. Then it was time for the first match.

Kurt Hawkins and Zack Ryder beat Finlay & Hornswoggle when Edge, who was the guest ref, hit the spear on Finlay. Ryder made the pin.

As Edge and Vickie were having their first dance, Big Show came out to cut the rug with the new Mrs. Edge. The irate power couple booked Show to take on the team of MVP, Shelton Benjamin, The Great Khali and Vladimir Kozlov. Show was in control early until all four guys got DQ’d for attacking him.

Vickie Guerrero tossed her bouquet to a group of WWE divas. Before she could do so, Michelle McCool got into it with Natalya. Cherry caught the bouquet.

Natalya Neidhart pretty much destroyed Cherry.

Umaga beat Ken Kennedy with the Samoan Spike.

Brian Kendrick beat the returning Jimmy Wang Yang.

John Morrison and The Miz beat Jesse and Festus.

Vickie ordered that Matt Hardy take on Jeff Hardy. The Hardys rammed wedding cake in Chavo’s face. This went to a no decision when La Familia hit the ring.

The final TV segment showed Edge professing his love for Vickie. HHH then came out to give the couple his gift. He showed a video of Edge trying to get it on with the wedding planner. Vickie went nuts on Edge as the show ended.

Post Smackdown:

After video clip of the man in action, Ric Flair came out and gave an amazing farewell speech to the fans in Charlotte. It’s a shame it won’t air on TV. It also makes no sense that they didn’t have him on TV to push his DVD. Charlotte loves Flair.

Dark Match:

HHH beat Edge when Vickie came out and speared her philandering husband.

Bret Hart Shoots on Hulk Hogan, Talks About MMA & What Pro Wrestling Needs

July 18, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

WWE Hall of Fame legend Bret Hart was interviewed this week by Canada.com. The Hitman talks about mixed martial arts, what the pro wrestling industry needs, his disdain for Hulk Hogan and more. Here are the highlights:

UFC & Mixed Martial Arts: “I’d never do UFC. I wasn’t good enough and I was smarter than that. I have a lot of respect for UFC guys, but I still think they’re not getting the money they deserve, especially when I see them taking all those head shots. You can see the brain cells just vanishing when they get hit five, six times. It’s the kind of brain damage you carry around forever. You can’t put a price tag on your brain and I know that better than anyone else [since a concussion ended his career]. I have a lot of respect for it, but it’s not something I would have done, since I put too much value on my brain cells. I don’t mind pretending to bash somebody’s brain cells out.

What Wrestling Needs: “It takes one certain guy. It seems to be the case all the time. One guy seems to be able to ignite the industry. There’s lot of good wrestlers out there, but I think they need to make some adjustments with the story telling.”

Hulk Hogan’s Classless Comments about John Graziano: “I think he showed his true colours. He’s washed up. He exposed himself. It’s pretty callous. I think he dug himself an even bigger hole on Larry King. He was always selfish. Everything Hogan ever did was for Hogan. That could have happened to anybody. We all have kids that age. I know I wouldn’t have handled things the same way. I would have been very remorseful.”

Who He Keeps In Touch With: “I’m pretty close friends with [Roddy] Piper, Stone Cold [Steve Austin] . . . I stay in touch with Edge, and Chris Jericho is a pretty good friend of mine.”

What’s Next for Him: “I’m going to try to write a novel. I’m going to pursue getting my autobiography made into some sort of film. I’d like to see it be an episodic thing, like The Sopranos . . . I’ve had some pretty interesting discussions. Brad Pitt’s film company came to me. I haven’t heard back from them, but there’s been good interest.”

– Even though Ric Flair is advertised to appear at tomorrow night’s SmackDown taping in Charlotte, it is far from a lock of him appearing on television on Friday night. He’ll likely appear before the crowd and not in a taped segment for tomorrow’s show.

– SmackDown head writer Michael Hayes is scheduled to appear at the NWA Wrestling Legends Fanfest in Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday, August 15. He will be signing autographs and taking photos with fans from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Later in the night, Hayes will be inducting longtime friend and Freebird partner Buddy Roberts into the NWA Wrestling Legends Hall of Heroes.
